Innovation

Though Myopia is on the rise, together we can slow the progression and help preserve your child’s vision for a clearer tomorrow.

Our Mission

At Deerwood Family Eyecare, we provide the best patient experience while preserving your vision for a better tomorrow.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition beginning in childhood in which objects up close appear clear while objects farther away appear blurry.

The more you know

"Normal" Vision vs. Myopic Vision

In a "normal" eye, light rays focus directly on the retina at the back of the eye. In a myopic eye:

The eyeball often grows too long from front to back.

Because of this elongation (axial length), light rays focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it

This shift in focus makes distance vision-such as looking at a classroom chalkboard or a cityscape-blurry

Factors and Risks

%

Progression

Deerwood Family Eyecare | Myopia Management

Myopia often starts in childhood and can progress as a child grows, leading to increasingly stronger prescriptions. An estimated 36% of children in the United States suffer from it.

Lifestyle Impact

Prolonged “near work” (reading or digital device use – nearly 2080 hours per year) and limited time spent outdoors are associated with the development and progression of the condition.

Long-Term Health

Higher levels of nearsightedness can increase the long-term risk of eye conditions (glaucoma or retinal issues). Roughly 1.5 million Americans have eye conditions relating to Myopia.

Myopia is on the rise, but together we can slow it down and protect the vision your children depend on; today and for years to come.

Glasses

Eye glasses (spectacles) can be used to correct blurred vision from myopia, and special designs can also slow myopia progression in children and teenagers.

Contact Lenses

Ortho-k is short for orthokeratology and Ortho-k lenses are worn during sleep to gently reshape the cornea so you can see clearly during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Atrophine Eye Drops

Atropine can be effective for treating children with worsening myopia, or when glasses or contact lens-based treatments alone aren’t sufficient. Studies have discovered that when atropine is combined with other myopia control treatments, especially ortho-k, the effects of myopia control can be further enhanced.
